Abstract: The rich and big data generated and read by millions of users on social media tells what is happening in the real world in a rapid and accurate fashion.In recent years many researchers have explored real-time streaming data from Twitter for a broad range of applications such as predicting flu trends.In this talk, we present our design and implementation of a prototype system to collect flu related twitter data.Further we use partial differential equation models to describe the diffusion of flu related information in Twitter in both spatial and temporal dimensions.We correlate the results with official statistics from Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).These results demonstrate that the system can be used to real-timely monitor spread of flu trends.

王海燕教授个人简介:

王海燕,男,1985年本科毕业于西北师范大学数学系,1988年毕业于中国海洋大学,获硕士学位并留校任教,1997年在美国密歇根州立大学获得数学博士学位和计算机硕士学位,1997年今先后在Informative Graphics Corporation (Arizona,USA)、美国美国阿肯色中央大学、密歇根州立大学、亚利桑那州立大学工作。现担任国际数学杂志《Mathematical Biosciences and Engineering 》、《Advancesin Differential Equations and Control Processes》、《Biostatistics,Bioinformatics and Biomathematics》、《Journal ofOperators》、《ISRN Mathematical Analysis》等副主编。

主要研究方向为应用数学、微分方程和生物数学,在《Journalof Differential Equations》、《Discrete and ContinuousDynamical Systems A》等等重要期刊上发表学术论文50多篇,研究成果得到国内外同行的好评, 研究成果得到国际同行的广泛引用。2011年获得密歇根州立大学Outstanding Research Award from New College of interdisciplinaryarts and sciences。
